Your essential checklist for the start of autumn

The Essentials Strictly speaking March in South Africa is the beginning of autumn but the sun is still hot and high in the sky, and many plants in your garden are still flowering. Focus on feeding everything in March. Feed everything with an organic pelleted fertiliser, and then cover beds with compost. This will help strengthen plants for winter and ensure a jump-start for spring. Lift and divide agapanthus, dietes and other summer-flowering perennials. Sow sweet peas and winter-flowering annuals such as primulas, pansies, Namaqualand daisies and lobelias. Add end-of-season colour with colourful pots of Amaryllis belladonna, black-eyed Susan and as many plectranthus species as you have space for.
