GEORGES MÉLIÈS, THE FATHER OF FANTASTIQUE CINEMA, WAS A MAGICIAN BEFORE BECOMING A FILMMAKER, and he utilized his vaudeville-esque artistry to invent some of the first screen effects. In celebration of this, Philippe Spurrell, director of The Film Society in Montreal, curated a spellbinding evening of early genre cinema, live music, 16mm projection, magic, mentalism and even tap dancing! The festivities began with a showing of a rare print of Georges Franju’s The Great Méliès (1952), a tender 31-minute docudrama on the silentera filmmaker starring Méliès’ son André in the titular role.
