Smashed Pumpkins Y'know, for a modestly budgeted, middle-brow 1980s creature feature, Pumpkinhead had some pretty extraordinary things going for it: an ersatz-local-legend premise so authentically rustic that some viewers believed it was based on actual folklore; one of the gnarliest movie monsters of the twentieth century, designed and brought to life by Stan Winston’s top proteges; Lance Henriksen in the most heartfelt (and genuinely heartbreaking) performance of his career as a decent, kind-hearted everyman who, in a moment of unimaginable trauma, makes one very bad decision that unleashes catastrophe on the righteous and the wicked alike. No, I haven’t dedicated this month’s column to a Pumpkinhead retrospective again (see RM#81).
