Everything works until it breaks. At that point, make sure you can fix it

It’s important to have a daily routine of bike checks, backed up by a useful knowledge of how to fix basic problems. Any combination of (a) being in a less-developed country, (b) taking your bike through remote and challenging terrain, and (c) inclement weather makes this vital. A glitch that could be a journey-ender for an ill-prepared rider might be a short delay for someone who’s mastered the basics. Of the issues we deal with on our expeditions, only a tiny number relate to mechanical breakdowns. The majority of these can be avoided with the right regime of pre-ride work and regular checks.
