CHEDDAR GORGE SOMERSET WITH NAMED features like Blackrock Gate, Wind Rock and the Pinnacles (not to mention nearby Velvet Bottom) you’d guess that Cheddar Gorge was an impressive bit of scenery. JRR Tolkien thought so, making it the basis for the fortress of Helm’s Deep in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. What you’re dealing with is a steep-cliffed limestone gorge through which around three miles of the ribbony Cliff Road (B3135) winds. It’s 137 metres from top to bottom at its most extreme, and the cave system beneath it is one of the nation’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s more the views than the riding that you’ll remember. But the surrounding Mendip Hills are very good for that. PARKING… Best place for a quick stop is the limited amount right beneath Cheddar…
