Ditching the eco-guilt

Dr Kate Luckins is a sustainable living educator. Two decades ago, she created The Clothing Exchange and kickstarted a global clothes-swapping movement. Since then, she has appeared across all forms of media, from the Financial Review to Mamamia, and spoken on stages around the globe, including at the UN Headquarters in Nairobi, COP15 and Ted X. She’s also helped thousands of people ditch their eco-guilt and reduce consumerism and waste, via her educational platform Sustainable Lifestyle. We spoke with Kate about her new book, Live More With Less; Upgrade your life without costing the Earth!

What drove you to write this book? I’ve been an enthusiastic sustainability educator and anti-waste activist for decades. I started The Clothing Exchange and inspired Australia’s clothes swapping movement. But struggling to maintain my ‘green’ standards as a new parent motivated me to write Live More with Less. I’d lived many shades of ‘green’ having grown up with an Eco-Dad (Alan Pears), and become a sustainable fashion trailblazer, but was finding it impossible to keep the macro issue of climate change a priority amongst the micro emergencies of everyday with a newborn. A PhD in sustainability is no help on the frontline of a number 3 nappy situation! We care about our kid’s future, but we want life’s conveniences to make things easier too.
