While generations of vegetarians have turned their back on meat for religious reasons, health concerns or because Morrissey told them it was unethical, environmentalism has emerged as one of the main drivers behind people going plant-based.
A recent UK survey suggested 53% of all vegans identified sustainability as their chief motivation (although vegetarians tended more towards health or animal welfare). Likewise in Australia, a 2019 study found that the environment was the top reason to avoid meat according to young people, non-white people and people from the inner city.
