A second life for big EV batteries

What happens to electric bus batteries when they reach the end of their service life? They go on to charge smaller EVs, of course!

One of the most common anti-EV complaints is what happens to old EV batteries when they are no longer serviceable in an EV. We have seen a number of projects using old batteries from light passenger vehicles in stationary energy storage, but large EV batteries are also used in this way. A recent installation by Z Energy in New Zealand repurposed an electric bus battery that had been removed from service due to age, using it as stationary storage at an EV charging site as an energy buffer. By using old batteries in this way, it is possible to have high-powered chargers on sites which lack a high-powered electrical connection.
