Roses A hardy shrub with edible flowers. Buy a scented variety from a specialist grower and purchase in autumn as a bare-root plant with no foliage, or in spring, when it will come in a pot. Follow the instructions. Dahlias A tender perennial with edible petals and tubers. Grow from tubers potted up in the spring. As soon as you see green shoots appear and all danger of frost has passed, plant them outside in a sunny sheltered spot. Violas A hardy perennial with edible flowers. Grow from seed sown under cover in the autumn or sow directly where you want plants in early spring. Sweet violets make wonderful ground cover and are happy in shade.
