Blackwell is an outstanding example of an Arts & Crafts house, with architecture and interiors to inspire

A Grade I-listed building, Blackwell was designed by renowned architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott as a Lake District holiday home for Manchester brewery owner Sir Edward Holt, his wife Elizabeth and their five children. It was perfectly placed for the family to enjoy sailing on Lake Windermere, playing tennis and relaxing, away from the bustle of the city. In later years the Holt family came to spend less time at the house, and it became used as a school from 1941 when pupils from Huyton College in Liverpool were evacuated to Blackwell, continuing as a school premises until 1976. The building was completed in 1901 and has barely changed since, retaining most of its original decorative features, thus making it a rare architectural gem and one of the best examples…
