Craft It really excites me when I see crafts brought to life in our contemporary lives; it gives me a feeling of nostalgia mixed with hope for the future In the 1800s, life on the Shetland Islands was very hard for many women. The growing season was short, conditions were harsh and winters long and dark. Between 1800 and 1900, the population of Shetland was roughly three women to one man. Men were often away at sea (where they sometimes died) for months at a time or else they emigrated, leaving women behind to run the crofts – small farmsteads with animals and crops – bring up children and try to survive by doing hard, physical work such as peat cutting or fish gutting.
