Beautiful and useful are the principles behind low-maintenance ‘edimental’ gardens, where edible plants flourish in ornamental borders

We expect our living spaces to work hard for us, to be both functional and beautiful – and the garden is no exception. If you love the idea of having a gorgeous and productive garden, abundant with foliage, flowers and edible produce, ‘edimentals’ may be the answer, especially for gardeners who find themselves short on space and time. Think of edimentals as the William Morris approach to gardening, in which plants are chosen to be both useful and beautiful. The term ‘edimental’ was coined by gardener Stephen Barstow and encompasses a huge variety of everyday plants that both look and taste good, many of which you may already grow.
