A department store with a difference

Bristol's Sparks (sparksbristol.co.uk) is redefining what a department store can be. Housed in a former Marks & Spencer building, Sparks (the name a fun take on the building's former occupant) is a sustainability hub where visitors can shop for vintage, upcycled and ethical products while learning about sustainable living. It's a collaborative effort, with multiple local charities, traders and businesses working together. ‘We wanted to create an inspiring space that wasn't just about shopping, but about learning and engagement as well,’ says Jenny Foster of Global Goals Centre, who developed the Sparks project alongside Artspace Lifespace. ‘It's about sparking ideas, creativity and action.’ There were plenty of challenges getting the project off the ground.
