From the shards of his mother-in-law's broken plate, Robert Strati created a work of art which sent him in a completely new direction – creating wild and joyous ink drawings incorporating the smashed fragments. The New York-based artist made pieces that went viral, and has since exhibited at the Royal Academy and is currently showing as part of an exhibition exploring climate change at the Aga Khan Centre Gallery in London. Tell us about that first broken plate. My wife was in the kitchen during lockdown and she dropped a small blue willow pattern plate that we'd inherited from her mother. It was a stressful time anyway and she was upset to lose something that had belonged to her mom. There was a large fragment left that she kept but…
