Simon Martin's bijou flat proves that you don't need huge scale to create a cultured and elegant home

Yellow fever The living room had lost its chimneypiece, but Simon found one reclaimed from a house on the seafront. Above it hangs an engraving by Richard Bawden, Edward Bawden's son, entitled The Cardew Bowl, and the lower two linocuts on either side are by Simon's friend, artist Christopher Brown. Simon bought the plaster figure of a seated man from a local antiques shop and thinks it is probably by Glyn Philpot. The chair and footstool are upholstered in Zig Zag by Enid Marx. Pitch perfect A short section of wall made from reclaimed matchboarding (left) separates the kitchen from the living room. Simon has recently painted it in Farrow & Ball's Pitch Black and used the same colour for the kitchen panelling and the shelves of the dresser. Here…
