Nestled in the Kent countryside, Sissinghurst was the home of prolific poet and writer Victoria (Vita) Sackville-West and her author and diplomat husband Harold Nicolson. Part of the legendary Bloomsbury Set – Virginia Woolf based her novel Orlando on her and Vita's relationship – Sissinghurst reflects their sensibilities: beauty, romance and creative freedom. Vita and Harold bought the property and 450-acre estate in early 1930, at the time a run-down Elizabethan wreck: none of the buildings were habitable and the grounds were full of rubbish. But the pair were taken with its potential, particularly the opportunity for Vita to create a beautiful garden.
