Maximalism isn't just leopard print and bright pink, but has its roots in a fascinating history and informs how we think of home

Flick the pages of this magazine or scroll through social media and you're sure to discover rooms bursting with print, pattern and bold colour. The freedom that ‘more is more’ gives is intoxicating, leading designers, homeware brands and homeowners alike to increasingly embrace the bright and beautiful, to layer, display collections, art and memories. But far from being a modern trend, the roots of maximalism can be traced back to the 17th and 18th centuries, with baroque and then rococo and neoclassicism: a lot of gold, impossibly large chandeliers, intricately painted ceilings and plenty of sculptures.
