Located north of Cambridge, Anglesey Abbey’s fascinating past charts a long period, from 1135 when it began as a hospital, to being converted into a priory (it was never an abbey) of Augustinian canons in the early 13th century. Henry VIII famously began the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, which put paid to the canons’ way of life, along with the destruction of many monastic buildings. In 1596, Anglesey Abbey was acquired by the Fowkes family who converted it into an Elizabethan manor house. Fast forward to 1926 and, along with his younger brother Henry, American-born Lord Fairhaven bought the property.
