Textile conservator Constanze Zimmer on why her work often involves in-depth research, revealing layers of history before restoration can begin

My grandmother, an aspiring seamstress, taught me to sew when I was seven. Although she couldn’t complete her training due to the war, I decided to fulfil her dream by becoming a seamstress myself. I trained at an opera house in Berlin, where I discovered historic costumes. This sparked my interest in history and led me to study textile conservation and restoration, with training in Switzerland, Cologne and Paris. I eventually worked at Historic Royal Palaces in the UK and at the V&A. I started my own business, Then Eyne, in 2020. I conduct detailed surveys and condition assessments of textiles, providing treatment plans and cost estimates.
