For me, the season is a celebration of nostalgia, a heady mix of textures, patterns and gaudy old-fashioned ornaments that together conjures up so many childhood memories. But I have a confession to make. Until a few years ago, I had a very different approach to the entire festive season, with a calm and sedate style that you might easily have mistaken for boring. I would only put up red, gold and silver decorations and kept strictly to warm white lighting on the tree and enforced this rule unwaveringly. Then something changed.
