Input, Output and Pipes

Most operating systems allow you to direct the output of something on the screen to, for example, a file. Linux, with its ancestral history of Unix-like command-based arguments, goes a step further and offers much more control.

You input things into the computer (press keys, move the mouse) and it makes calculations and outputs content (changes the display, makes a noise, for example). STEP 1 When you enter commands into Linux (in the command line), you are using standard input and output. This is so obvious that most people don’t even think about it. You enter commands using the keyboard (that’s input) and it responds to the screen (output). This is the regular way of doing it, which is why it’s “standard input and output” (often called “stdin” and “stdout” for short).
