Sheaf Engineering, which purchased 37402 from Direct Rail Services in early 2024, is making progress on returning the locomotive to main line use for spot hire.
The team behind restoring the ‘37’ has been progressing work on it at Barrow Hill, with an engine overhaul. Work carried out so far includes:
■ Fitting of a full set of main bearings.
■ The big end bearings have been replaced.
■ The connecting rods have been checked for ovality, bends and twists.
■ All pistons re-ringed.
■ All cylinder heads overhauled.
■ Twelve fuel injectors overhauled.
■ Twelve new liners installed.
■ Both turbochargers have been overhauled.
■ The oil bypass valve removed, tested and re-fitted.
■ The water thermostat removed, tested and re-fitted.
■ The heat exchanger overhauled.
■ New batteries…
