The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has published its report into a collision at Aviemore station on the Strathspey Railway on September 29 2023, in which the steam locomotive Flying Scotsman, travelling tender first, was in collision with coaches of the ‘Royal Scotsman’ train.
Investigators concluded that poor visibility meant the driver was not aware how close the coaches were. There were six people in the cab, but no one raised a warning because of ambiguity of roles.
RAIB makes one recommendation to Strathspey Railway Company to review its management of special events and foreseeable abnormal operations.…
