Class 58 is the headline act at Severn Valley diesel gala

THE first passenger workings in the UK by a Class 58 in more than 22 years was the headline attraction at the Severn Valley Railway’s October 3-6 diesel event, with 58023 Leicester Depot working one return trip on the Friday and Saturday. Because of the locomotive’s relatively high weight (129 tonnes) and the need to have a Class 20 translator, the line’s civil engineer requested that its use be limited. A Class 58 is air-braked only, and the SVR’s coaches are all vacuum-braked, meaning that a dual-braked Class 20 was needed to operate the trains - 20142 was used on the first trip and 20048 on the second.
