Hitachi Rail claims success with inter-city battery trials on Class 802

Hitachi Rail says the better-thanepected results from its inter-city battery trials, in partnership with Angel Trains and TransPennine Express, have demonstrated that battery technology could work across the network as an alternative traction option. The trial, which has been running for several months, involves replacing the diesel engine of a TPE Class 802 with a battery power unit. It has undertaken several months of dynamic testing on different routes to understand how effective it could be. And the results showed significant fuel cost savings of up to 50%, against initial projections of 30%.
