Mail’s role in rail freight

ROYAL Mail’s decision in July to retire its mail trains was bigger news than it might have been for any other freight customer of the same size, for three reasons. Firstly, it seemed to be travelling in the wrong direction for rail freight in general, making it that little bit more difficult to hit targets set by the previous government. Secondly, you might have been forgiven for thinking (as you might on hearing news of an old rock or movie star you’d not heard of for decades) that it’s surprising only because you thought they’d passed away ages ago.
