Royal Mail sounds ‘last post’ for its Class 325s

ROYAL Mail has officially told DB Cargo that it will end the company’s rail freight contract in October, in favour of road haulage. DB Cargo has been running Royal Mail’s rail operations since 2010. But the postal business owns the Class 325 trains, which were built in the 1990s and are reaching the end of their life. In a letter to staff, DB Cargo UK CEO Andrea Rossi spoke of the company’s “profound disappointment” at the decision, which he said was a U-turn on Royal Mail’s previous commitment to increase the use of rail freight to meet net zero targets. Stressing that the decision was not based on any performance failings, Rossi warned that it raised concerns not only for DB Cargo, but also for the wider rail freight sector.…
