Chiltern unveils plans for new, greener trains

CHILTERN Railways unveiled its ‘Right Route’ to 2030 vision at Westminster on July 19, with the aim of introducing new trains and improved rail services by the start of the new decade. As revealed in RE327, the operator wants to replace its existing Class 165 fleet with a new fleet, which would likely include battery technology. Launching its vision, the operator makes the case that Office of Rail and Road (ORR) figures show that its fleet has an average age of 28.9 years, making it the third oldest in the country, however it is the oldest fleet without a replacement being introduced.
