Strategy offers a chance to reset local transport planning

The new Integrated National Transport Strategy has an opportunity to fix some of the issues that have plagued cities and regions in England. But it won’t be easy. RICHARD WILCOCK investigates

AT this early stage, it wouldn’t be wise to second guess the government’s exact plans for its newly announced Integrated National Transport Strategy, which is at its very early stages. However, there a few clues as to how the Department for Transport wants to frame it. The announcement was made in Leeds - the largest city in Europe without a mass transit system. It’s also a city which has been doggedly pressing (to little avail) for an integrated transport system for two decades. The government press release that came with the announcement had a bus and some e-bikes in the foreground. Tellingly absent from this picture was any form of tram or train.
