HE confirms consultation policy on bridge infilling

HIGHWAYS England has formally confirmed its policy U-turn and stated that no more decisions about work on redundant railway structures - including infilling bridges and tunnels - will be made without full public consultation. The statement, in the government-owned body’s annual report, says there will be no repeat of incidents such as 2021’s infilling of the Great Musgrave bridge in Cumbria, which is costing the taxpayer an estimated £431,000 to reverse. This reversal is taking a significant chunk of HE’s £9 million annual budget for the 3,100 unused railway structures for which it is responsible in the UK.
