Chiltern Railways has issued a call for expressions of interest from “established” suppliers for “between 20 and 70 new or converted low emissions” multiple units, in a five-year contract worth around £400 million. In setting out a broad-brush approach, the Arriva-owned operator doesn’t make any specific requirements, but it says the replacement trains “must achieve a meaningful reduction in the exhaust emissions and exterior noise levels compared to Chiltern’s existing DMUs”. It has set a deadline of September 15 for tender registrations. With its BR Networker Class 165 diesel multiple units (comprising 89 vehicles in two- and three-car formations) now 30 years old, Chiltern issued two procurement notices in September 2022 for “between 30 and 70 existing or converted BEMUs” with a circa £200m contract value.
