The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has developed a suite of metrics to help the rail industry measure performance across the circular economy, waste management, and resource management.
Working with the industry and consultant Ricardo, RSSB has completed the first phase of the project to enable consistent measurement and to support widescale adoption of circular economy principles.
The project has identified existing reporting, data flows and metrics to create a shortlist of metrics and developed data collection plans.
Core metrics have been selected as being the highest priorities for the rail industry to adopt, based on stakeholder interviews. They include:
■ Station and depot waste generated.
■ Surplus food redistributed.
■ Recycled content in rail infrastructure.
