DLR seeks platform accessibility exemptions

THE Docklands Light Railway is applying for an exemption from some specific aspects of passenger accessibility regulations. Covering 54 platforms at 29 stations (not every station’s platform is affected), the application mainly relates to original parts of the network, which opened in stages from 1987. In total, the network has 45 stations. Only three major stations have staff. Although the DLR was built as an accessible railway, with lifts or ramps to all platforms, level boarding and wheelchair spaces, regulations have since changed. A consultation on the DLR application is now open, concerning the gap between the trains and platforms.
