First look at GBRf’s new Class 99s

Network The first of 30 bi-mode Co-Co Class 99s built for GB Railfreight have emerged from Stadler’s Valencia factory, in readiness for display at the InnoTrans trade show in Berlin in September. These locomotives run off the 25kV AC overhead wires and have a 2,400hp Cummins diesel engine. 99002 has already moved to Germany and will then return to Valencia before heading to the Velim test track in the Czech Republic in January (along with 99003), to undergo dynamic, noise and electro-magnetic testing as well as performance testing. 99001 will remain at Valencia for further site track and soak testing. The ‘99s’ have been funded by Beacon Rail, and there is an option for 20 more if needed. The first is due in the UK in May 2025.…
