Before embarking on making your quilt, you will need to ensure you have the right tools and equipment for the job. Some of the tools needed for quiltmaking are everyday sewing items and others are specialist tools you will need to source from your local quilt shop.

Rotary cutter and mat — the invention of the rotary cutter revolutionised quiltmaking. Finally there was a quick, easy and accurate way to cut strips, squares, triangles and diamonds. A rotary cutter has a razor-sharp circular blade — similar in appearance to a pizza cutter. Rotary cutters are available in a range of sizes. The most popular size for general use is a 45mm cutter. However, they are also available in 28mm, 60mm and 65mm. Small rotary cutters are perfect for cutting curved pieces, while large blades are great for cutting through many layers of fabric at a time or through heavier fabrics such as home furnishing and flannel fabrics.
