A night with Russian Circles is a post-rock show for those who are A normally bored by post-rock. Of course, the power trio have become a paragon of the subgenre since they debuted in 2006: they use both the progressive ambience and dramatic crescendos that define it, while also pushing its inventiveness forward with looper pedals and instrument switches. But live, they become much more essential with a light show that makes even their quietest moments exhilarating.
Anyone who catches a Russian Circles gig will always report back on the lighting first and tonight, as the Chicagoans return to London following four years away, it continues to dazzle. In fact – during the title track of last year’s Gnosis – it reaches a new apex. The song…
