The early years of 4AD were a golden age for art-rock, and it’s gladdening to see some of that era’s chief exponents breaking decades of radio silence to create new work, which is both instantly recognisable and shrewdly updated (albeit on different labels). After Anja Huwe’s comeback 35 years on, The Wolfgang Press now resurrect after a mere 29 years with A 2nd Shape (Downwards Records). Michael Allen and the Gray brothers had drifted from post-punk to white funk before their lengthy hiatus, but this is marvellous moody bugger stuff, broody and fractured yet always aware that its spine is the bass line.
