Relentless songsmith Devin Townsend will release a trilogy of LPs over the next 18 months, each representing different aspects of the Canadian’s personality and musical heritage. PowerNerd, out on October 25 via InsideOutMusic, was meant to be “a dumb rock record with Motörhead riffs and Bon Jovi choruses”, but a series of personal losses saw the polymath mash the original concept with reflective mourning. “It’s like nuts and gum in some ways,” he says. “Lyrically and emotionally, it became so difficult, so the combination of the two created this thing that kind of summarises my personality in ways that maybe other records don’t.
