Jim Steinman meets symphonic metal courtesy of Symphony X/ex-Nightwish duo. It seems a little unfair to Magnus Karlsson that his name doesn’t appear alongside Russell Allen and Anette Olzon’s on the cover of their second album together. As songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Karlsson is the creative engine behind Army Of Dreamers, but presumably it’s the presence of the former Nightwish star and Symphony X’s frontman that brings in the punters Like 2020’s Worlds Apart, this is big, bombastic symphonic prog metal that benefits from the contrast between Allen’s gruffer, masculine voice and Olzon’s purity of tone and lofty range. Karlsson’s arrangements balance crunchy guitar riffs with lush strings and grand melodic hooks, putting the project somewhere close to the pop metal mash-up of Amaranthe, minus the death metal growls.
