Derek Sherinian has again teamed up with drummer Simon Phillips for Vortex, his second solo album in as many years, so the time is ripe for us to catch up with the keyboard maestro. He talks about why the inspiration won’t run dry any time soon, life in Dream Theater and being named one of the best keyboard players by Prog readers.

Derek Sherinian reckons his new solo album is the “best of the best”, and when he speaks with such typically self-assured aplomb, it’s hard to argue. “It would be great if one of these songs was a runaway hit single that sold millions of copies,” the keyboard player jokes about Vortex. “But I hope a lot of people hear this record, become aware of my music, become fans and will come see the shows and buy more records in the future – and buy all the past stuff, too.
