THE UNSUNG MACHINE Many electronic instruments have a “randomise” function which lets you shape and sculpt sound in unexpected ways. None of them, however, are as aesthetically gorgeous and conceptually sound as this: a machine constructed from brass and walnut, which uses combinations of letters to trigger MIDI data. Its appearance was inspired by antique telecommunication devices predating the QWERTY keyboard, and it’s been used in collaborations between writers and its designer, Scottish musician Lomond Campbell.
