A snapshot of an eventful year in prog. Right from the off, Kevin Furbank – the author of previous Sonicbond books on Gong, Fairport Convention, and psychedelic rock from 1967 – readily acknowledges that the problem of a list-based tome, such as this, is that it’s based entirely on his taste. That, of course, means that not everyone is going to agree with the 22 albums he concentrates on in this 1972 focused book. Accepting that one person’s classic is another’s clunker, there’s no dissension with the inclusion of big hitters such as Jethro Tull, Yes and ELP. Alongside them, space is given to relevant releases from underdogs Strawbs and Matching Mole, as well as a host of European arrivals including Can, Neu!, PFM, Focus and even Aphrodite’s Child.
