Welsh neo-proggers’ rebirth continues. The world doesn’t seem in urgent need of any more moderately successful acts from yesteryear reforming to address ‘unfinished business’, with the emphasis on the latter word. But when Retreat From Moscow reconnected in 2019, after 38 years apart, there wasn’t any obvious financial incentive beyond a desire to play together again. Last year’s debut (!) album The World As We Knew It backed up that perception and this vibrant follow-up further reinforces it. Its nine tracks are bold, immediate and melodic, with opener Saving California tapping into the prehistory of the US West Coast, and diverse topics touched upon elsewhere include homelessness (Windchill), Welsh mythology (Flowerbride) and that old prog perennial, visions of a dystopian future (The Machine Stops).
