US proggers take a slightly different path with smoothly crafted collection. Pattern-Seeking Animals’ third album, 2022’s Only Passing Through, banished any lingering impression of them as merely a Spock’s Beard side-project, the band from which their four original members are also associated with. This goes further, making deliberate changes to their sound. With a different producer, a different studio and a different approach to songwriting and arranging, PSA have delivered an album that sounds like a true progression. There are still familiar points of reference: sections of the 12-minute He Once Was evoke both Pink Floyd and post-Lamb Genesis, while Somewhere North Of Nowhere throws up fleeting shades of Yes.
