French keyboardist gets colourful on collaborative fourth LP. Vivien Lalu, the driving force behind the project that bears his surname, has assembled a strong line-up on his fourth album. The result is greater than the sum of its parts. Lalu gives plenty of freedom of expression to each contributor, allowing them to shine among the glittering whole. Ex-Threshold vocalist Damian Wilson impresses throughout, particularly on the ever-shifting textures of The Wondering Kind. Guitarist/bassist Joop Walters’ playing brings a touch of class, with the title track’s satin-quilted solo a highlight. Lalu’s parents both played in 70s French prog act Polène and his love for such music is clear, as he balances progressive pomposity with memorable musicality. Forever Digital melds decades together, with a 70s-inspired keys-driven stomp meeting Wilson’s 80s arena-rock vocals.…
