AOR, prog, djent: it’s all here and more. It’s all change for HeKz as frontman Matt Young assembles a fresh line-up for the band’s fourth album. Terra Nova sees Young joined by guitarist Mark Bogert, Irina Markevich on violin and drummer Moyano el Buffalo, with a guest appearance by keyboard wizard Adam Holzman. Young’s influences aren’t hard to fathom, but they are sufficiently diverse to lend Terra Nova musical breadth, combining the classic and the modern. Sabotage suggests the pomp and grandeur of Kansas, and Mayday taps into the prog metal riffage of Dream Theater. The vocal harmonies and Young’s belting delivery hail from the era before growling replaced singing in rock music, but the production is glossy and distinctly contemporary.
