It’s the old sweeten-the-pill trick: lure the listener in with sweet tunefulness and infectious hooks, then take them where you will. This St Ives quartet do just that when they kick off the weighty, 23-minute suite Out Of Time that opens their fifth album with the enchanting topline melody that vocalist Tree Stewart serenades us with. It acts as a prelude to some engagingly freewheeling electric piano from Stewart, backed up by wriggling fretless bass and mood-swinging percussion, before guitarist Ally Carter gets to show out on the fretboard. Yet before the halfway point, the instrumental improvisation begins to meander to the point of indulgent padding until the vocal returns for the final passage.
