Modern prog heavyweights waste no time in reuniting. Just 20 months after their debut, Nick D’Virgilio, Neal Morse and Haken vocalist Ross Jennings return with an album that, unlike its tongue-in-cheek title, is bristling with imagination. Given all three are assured singers, it’s no surprise that Sophomore is a vocal-led record that’s embellished with minimalist but astutely assembled instrumentation. On the likes of Hard To Be Easy the trio’s voices blend seamlessly together, morphing into a wall of harmonies and deft acoustic undercurrents. On others, their individual timbres shine. D’Virgilio leads on the cheery, fluttering I’m Not Afraid, the proggiest song on offer.
