King Edgar keeps the freak flag still flying on late-career solo album. Break The Dark began life as a collection of sketches that Edgar Broughton had saved on various devices with the intention of completing with drummer brother Steve and long-term Edgar Broughton Band bassist Arthur Grant. The pandemic and Steve’s passing in 2022 derailed and then ultimately galvanised the project. Featuring appearances by Grant, cellist Calle Arngrip and Broughton’s son Luke, the result has a stately, glacial feel and a languorous minimalist richness. Broughton’s work is deeply ruminative and often profoundly mournful: The Raven’s Song is a deep and dark jig (‘a plague upon our capital that brings us to our knees’), while the moving Flowers In A Bowl brings Arngrip’s cello to the fore.
