THE PROG INTERVIEW TREVOR RABIN

Every month we get inside the mind of one of the biggest names in music. This issue it’s Trevor Rabin. The South African-born musician and composer is best known in prog circles for his work with Yes in the 80s and early 90s, but he began his musical journey at a very young age, joining several rock bands in his home country before eventually finding success after he relocated to California. Since the mid-90s, his name has popped up on film soundtrack scores, his credits including action movie Gone In 60 Seconds and the remake of Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. He was part of ARW with former Yes members Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson and, although the project didn’t yield any recorded material, he’s since turned his attentions back to his solo work, with the new album, Rio. He discusses his remarkable career so far and where he hopes his current path will lead.

Whether you think that Trevor Rabin was the man who ruined Yes or the lifeline that saved the band from oblivion in the 1980s, there’s no denying his virtuosity or his ability to write a decent tune. But the South African has always been a far more interesting and stylistically varied musician than he’s often given credit for. Born in Johannesburg in 1954, Rabin grew up in a liberal, musical household during the apartheid era and learned classical piano from the age of six. Taking up the guitar six years later, it soon became his obsession. Rabin first pursued a career as a session musician in South Africa and then formed the successful band Rabbitt in the early 70s.
